ICB pp. 224-254

p. 230 "Hickock said, 'Perry Smith killed the Clutters.'"  Irony at it's best!  Dick was so worried about Perry putting them in the Corner; then, Dick himself blurts out the info the detectives were so waiting to hear.  Perry was right--Dick's "'guts' were unreliable."  Throughout the book, Dick's "talk" has always been bolder than his actions (spray "hair on them walls" yet not directly killing the Clutters--instead holding the flashlight on them as Perry took their lives.).

  2. I had the same thought. Dick did all the planning and talked big, but when it came time to follow through on the plan it was Perry. Perry ransacked the rooms and killed all the people. Dick could talk-the-talk but made Perry walk-the-walk and then Dick caved under the cops' pressure.

  3. I think that that was Dick's plan all along. I think that Dick's plan all along was to blame the whole entire crime on Perry. Dick could have committed the crime by himself if he really wanted to. Instead, he choose to commit the crime with Perry so that if they got caught, Dick would have someone to blame everything on. In order for his plan to go correctly, he made sure to tell Perry not to tell anyone or snitch. All along Dick was using Perry.

  4. I Completely Agree. Throughout the book Perry seemed to be the man doing all the work. Dick was the brain. He did figure things out, but in the end Dick ended up being what would drag them down. So Perry was right, Dick was unreliable, and he just wasn't a good criminal.

  5. That's a really great point because I thought of perry as the weakling of the the two. I was sure that he was going to crack first under the pressure of the agents but in return in was dick who cracked and blamed it all on perry. It was a major shock to me because it was all talk and no action form dick. It truly showed how much of a coward he was.
